The Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is a public health measure which provides clean injecting equipment, information on safe injecting practices, general health information and primary health care.

Primary NSPs

  • Provides a range of sterile injecting equipment, including safe and appropriate disposal of used equipment.
  • Provides specialised injecting equipment such as pill filters and butterflies.
  • Provides information, advice on harm minimization and education on HIV, Hep C and other blood borne viruses
  • Undertakes primary health care (vein and health checks and first aid treatment)
  • Crisis Counselling provides active referrals to medical, legal, housing and social welfare agencies and provides follow up support.

Primary NSPs are open during week days 9.00am to 5.00pm, with a break over the lunch period. In general Primary NSPs are closed during public holidays and weekends. Over Christmas and Easter Primary NSPs may be open for limited hours, phone DIRECTIONS ACT for further information.

Secondary NSPS

  • Distribute clean injecting equipment, 4 and 8 packs
  • Distribute safe sex items such as condoms
  • Information and resources on harm minimisation and other health related issues
  • Locations include health centres, youth centres and some community organisations
